As an institution of higher education, the University of Sharjah is dedicated to the highest principles of scientific pursuit and learning. It aims to instill in its student community a spirit of independent research and a deep commitment for scientific thinking and continuous progress. The University is aware of its singular mission within society, and seeks to equip students with mental skills and rational capacities allowing them to chart their lives with imaginative creativity. While recognizing the importance of logical reasoning and scientific skills in the acquisition of knowledge, the University pays a special attention to the development of character in accordance with Islamic values and humanistic ideals. The University will thus be a beacon of true scientific thinking, cultural diversity, and human progress, faithful to its rich Islamic and Arab heritage.
The University of Sharjah values the human energy and material resources available in the UAE and the Arab and Islamic World, and recognizes the need for tapping these resources and channeling them towards the common good. Aware also of the interdependence of all the countries of the world, as in a Global Village, the University works towards the enhancement and consolidation of academic ties among universities and educational institutions in the world for the general benefit and well-being of all mankind. The University has already forged an affiliation agreement with the University of Exeter (England) according to which the latter is to provide faculty and student exchanges and academic support for the College of Engineering. Other affiliation agreements are concluded with McMaster University in Ontario Canada, which is affiliated with the College of Health Sciences and the University of Arizona which is affiliated with the College of Business and Management, in addition to a general affiliation agreement with the American University of Beirut,
History
The University of Sharjah was founded by a decree of his Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah and Supreme President of the University. It inaugurated its educational programs in October 1997.
Mode of Finance
Although the University of Sharjah is dependent largely on Government assistance, it maintains an independent status as a non-profit, non-coeducational academic institution dedicated to the pursuit of the highest moral and scientific principles, and to offering the best educational programs for its student community.
