Arab Decision

The Faculty of Science was one of the first faculties established in the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU). Classes started in the Faculty in the fall semester of the academic year 1977/1978. The Faculty of Science has endeavored, since then, to develop its performance and to achieve measures of excellence in its three main activities of education, scientific research and community service.

The Faculty of Science has taken significant steps, during the last few years, towards the development of all aspects of the Bachelor Programs in| Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Geology.

The development process aims at training the students to acquire self-learning skills, the introduction of unconventional interactive methods of teaching, and using modern technologies of teaching, e.g. Computer-Aided Instructions.

These efforts led to the recognition of the Faculty of Science as one of the well-known centers in the field of modern methods and technology of teaching science in the Arab World.

With the support of His Highness Sheikh Nahyan, Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, The Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research – the Chancellor the United Arab Emirates University, the Faculty of Science has established the first master’s program in the University in the academic year 1991/1992. It is an interdisciplinary program in “Environmental Science”. This is a unique program in the Gulf region in this field. The studies in the Program are characterized by their multidisciplinary nature. Each environmental problem has many aspects, which involve different disciplines including science, engineering, agricultural and medical sciences in addition to legislative, social and economic components. The Program aims at training specialists, at a graduate level, to hold key positions in the different areas of environment. It also aims at creating awareness, among the students, of the environmental hazards and challenges which endanger the world in general and the country in particular. The students are also trained to collect, process, and inexpert data using a sound scientific logic.

The president His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan was elected the man of the year 1993 for the environment, it is therefore not surprising that the United Arab Emirates University Plays and important leading role in education and research in the field of “Environmental Science”. The Faculty of Science has also established another master′s program, joint with the Faculty of Engineering in “Materials Science and Engineering”.

The Faculty of Science pays a great attention to scientific research. A number of research projects are being carried out at individual, departmental and interdepartmental levels. The results of such research activities are usually published in reputable international journals in addition to the journal of the Faculty of Science, which has an international editorial board. The Faculty of Science organizes researches meetings in its strategic research areas and provides many community services in the form of training, and refreshing courses, scientific and technical consultations and applied research. These services are custom designed according to the needs of the ministries, industry and other organizations in the country.

Finally, on behalf of my colleagues in the Faculty of Science, I like to express our sincere thanks and deep gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research–the Chancellor of the United Arab Emirates University, for his continuous support and encouragement for all activities of the Faculty of Science. Such support enables the Faculty to contribute to making the University a main source of knowledge and civilization in this country. The University will then fulfill its mission mandated by the President His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
