The CCI is a non profit organization , in accordance with decree No. 36 . It represents the country’s commercial & Industrial interests on the whole . Noting that the agricultural character has recently been added .

Its functions include :
- preparing statistics pertaining to economic circumstances
- providing information and publications as may be required by governmental headquarters and courts .
- presenting developmental quality projects , suggestions and opinions to concerned parties

The Chamber was established in 1933 under a decree issued by the French Mandatory authority, aiming to protect the domestic economic interests and to promote such interests in cooperation with official and unofficial organizations.

At the time of its first origination , the chamber’s consecutive boards of directors , appointed by official authority , focuses on agricultural issues such as marketing agricultural commodities , decreasing prices of fertilizers and feul oil , improving Saida harbour and compensating for damages caused by natural catastrophes .
Among its concerns also , was to broaden the customs office and to grant it the necessary authorities .

Year 1967 was considered an important curve in the chamber’s history , as it witnessed the issue of the legislative decree No. 36 that organizes the function of the chambers of commerce & industry in Lebanon . And under this decree the first board of directors which represented all southern districts and consisted of active members was elected by CCI general assembly .
