The main objective of the Center is the advancement of applied social sciences with special emphasis on Egypt, the Arab World and the Third World.
The Center is particularly engaged with the core development issues of democratization and the role of civil society organizations. ICDS has its own research and advocacy programs. It also conducts commissioned research and provides consultation and training services to governmental and international organizations in numerous fields. The Center carries out supportive activities related to its objectives - including the organization of seminars, conferences and the publication and dissemination of information. The Center publishes the renowned monthly magazine Civil Society which is currently available on-line. Since its establishment in 1988, ICDS has undertaken more than sixty research projects, organized about 110 conferences, seminars and workshops, and provided consultations to a number of prominent Arab and international organizations.
